History has shown that most people prefer owning a dog than any other animal as a pet. This is due to the fact that they have proven themselves to be efficient, intellectual and trainable. Dogs have the uncanny ability to be loyal to their masters but wary of strangers. These qualities make them a perfect buddy for those who are living alone as well as to couples who are just beginning to start their own families. No matter what is the age of the person, he can still benefit from the presence of a dog.

Studies show that a dog's behavior as an adult is a result of his breeding and training. Because you can't do anything anymore about a dog's breed since it is an inherent part of his personality, you just have to make sure that he was trained well in his younger days so that you won't be experiencing any attitude problems when he is already a full grown adult. This is a big consideration to mull over when you want to get another puppy in the future. Here is a list of puppy training secrets that you must know in order to have a well-mannered pet in the future.

Before anything else, you must first establish a good rapport with your pet. Do not immediately start ordering difficult tricks that will make him want to scamper away with his tail between his legs. Set the mood first by playing with him, cuddling him and stroking his tummy. When he seems to be well rested and relaxed, you can start the drill by taking away his freedom. This might sound harsh but you have no choice if you want to impose discipline in his life.

Chain him, put him in his kennel or place him inside a crate to show that you mean business. At first, they might get a little noisy and howl until the wee hours of the morning, especially if they have been previously used to a very free lifestyle. Try to be immune to this kind of suffering. Sooner or later, they will realize that all their whimpering will have no effect on you. This will inculcate the fact that you are the boss and your orders must be followed strictly down to the last letter. It won't be long before they get used to this set up and will look forward to your arrival.

Second, teach him a simple trick followed by a treat. The treat could come in the form of a small chewable bone or a piece meat. Just like the classic conditioning method by renowned psychologist Ivan Pavlov, they will learn to associate the new trick with food. This will stroke their interest and whet their appetite for more food.

Third, you can turn 180 degrees and let your dog learn through the negative conditioning method. Utilize this method by saying the words no, stop and don't in a loud and commanding tone. They will make a distinction that it is something important in relation to your voice.

Fourth, you have to follow through. Be consistent when giving commands and orders as well as their corresponding rewards or punishments. Do not flip flop when it comes to this. Your dog will get confuse if you did something once then change the rules the second time. He must realize that everything is well-established when it comes to your instructions.

Lastly, give plenty of alternatives. If there are chores that your dog can't easily do as told, like not peeing on the plant, then provide another option like giving him a pee box. This will shift his attention and result to a more favorable attitude. Don't be such a strict disciplinarian all the time that you will take the fun out of this training exercise. Have fun with your pet dog.

Ever since the beginning of time, dogs have been the most preferred choice as pets by most households. Many have proven that they are proficient, steadfast, smart and trainable in diverse farm duties and simple household tasks. They can be charming and submissive to their owners but vicious to total strangers. These qualities make them an ideal escort for those who are single in life as well as to couples who are just planning to start their own brood. Babies to older adults will not have a hard time adjusting to their presence.

It has been said that a dog's behavior only reflect his breeding and training. Obviously, there is nothing that you can do anymore to change his breeding. However, there is still a lot you can do with his training. You can still teach new tricks. Now, if you are thinking of getting another puppy as a pet, here are some of the best-kept secrets of puppy training that you should bear in mind.

The first thing that you should bear in mind when training a puppy is to start low and go slow. This means that you must first establish a good rapport with your pet. Do not instantaneously start the complicated tricks that will make him want to run away with his tail between his hind legs. Create a favorable mood that will make him relax and be conducive to training. Upon reaching that ideal state, then you can already commence your training schedule. This might seem cruel but you have no alternative if you want to enforce obedience in his existence.

Fourth, you have to be unswerving in your reward or punishment. When you either of the two, make sure that it is appropriate to the excellent job or the awful deed. Variety should be avoided at all cost or else your dog will develop some kind of a crisis. The same premise applies to all the people in your household.

Lastly, give choices. If there are tricks or tasks that he can't easily act upon like not digging the front lawn or backyard, then provide another alternative like another digging space beside the dog house yard.

Are you sick and tired of waking up to find another good pair of shoes all chewed out? Do you hate having people over because you just know theyll get slobbered all over, or worse? Are the water puddles and poop mounds around the house finally getting to your nerves? If you are, then its time to get some dog training in your house.

People who want to take personal charge of their pet's training but either don't know how or have no time have come to rely on the services of in home dog training companies. Certified trainers are dispatched to do what needs to be done and the dog owners can sit back and watch their canines progress inthe comfort and privacy of their homes. Before you decide to engage in hiring the dog trainer, here are five important questions you need to ask.

What level of obedience does your canine qualify for? If he already has a modicum of dog manners, this means you already have had some success in dog training and you may want to consider following it up yourself. However, if you correctly asses yourself incapable of teaching your pet anything, then have the professional over as soon as possible.

Where are all the good trainers? The best trainers are those whose work speak for itself. Talk to your friends and neighbors who have used a professional's services in training their pet. If they don't know anybody, they should know somebody who comes highly recommended. Check the yellow pages or surf through the internet for companies or individuals that offer the training your dog needs (basic obedience training or specific behavior modification). Research on their rates and find one that gives you the best value for your money.

What are the qualities of a good trainer? The most important of all is his manner of teaching and handling the dog. There should be no kicking, yelling, rough handling at all in his part. You are putting your pet in his hands so it is your right to ask for records and referrals he should have which you can check for yourself. While no official government licenses are available for animal training are available; veterinary/animal schools give certification to graduates who have taken the necessary courses to be professional trainers. The International Association of Canine Professional offer CDT and CDTA certification, if your trainer has this then chances are he is well equipped to teach canines.

Which is better: individual or group classes? One-on-one sessions will ensure that your pet gets all the attention and teaching concentrated on him. It will probably help him learn faster. Group classes on the other hand, will help the dog further develop social skills with others of his own kind. If the trainer is good, he will be able to customize his teaching to each students learning curve. It will also be better economically for more people to pitch in and share the expense of their dogs education. If you prefer group classes, form one with pet owners you know who take good care of their pets. With all the rough housing thats bound to happen, you wouldnt want your own infected with fleas or other kinds of infection.

When should training begin? Right away! Ideally, training puppies should begin as early as 8 weeks old. However, you can always teach an old dog new tricks. If you are prepared, your dog is in attendance, and you have a competent trainer, then sky's the limit! Through in home dog training, you can have a trained dog the safe and convinient way.

Owning a dog has been proven to be just as effective as taking anti-depressants, thus relieving you of feelings of depression and loneliness. Another medical fact is a lower blood pressure, and a reduction in stress. Nothing on earth tops the love and companionship of owning a dog. There are a few things to consider though, and that is dog behavior problems that might spring up. It could be anything from digging up your yard, destroying your stuff by chewing, wetting the floors, and maybe even barking all night.

When dog behavior problems happen, your dog may just be doing it out of boredom sometimes even some pent up aggression. A lot of times it is out of the lack of training. With proper training, and some lifestyle adjustments, you'll will have a happy and loving relationship with your dog in no time.

Getting your pet spayed or neutered - This has been proven to be pretty common in helping your dog live longer, while at the same time being healthier, and having a lot less dog behavior problems.

Scheduling some workout time will provide both you and your dog some much needed exercise, a healthy dog is a well behaved dog. Usually a 30 - 45 min walk or run will be more than enough for both of you to maintain a healthy lifestyle, as well as help with your dogs boredom, which will hopefully reduce your dog behavior problems, like destruction. Which would mean that less or none of your stuff will get all chewed up.

Training your dog is one of the main things that will allow you to live a long and happy life together. From what the American Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says, training your dog will not only teach you how to control your dogs behavior, but will teach you how to properly react your dogs behavior problems as well, in both a safely and humanely manner

A big thing, that most people forget is being patient with your dog. Teaching your best friend to be a better dog will take determination on your part, its very much worth it though. After all, as your best friend, it will very much appreciate the bonding process during all your time together.

It's always fun and exciting when you get a new puppy. They are cute and playful and it can even be easy to forget that the cute little ball of fur will grow up to be an adult dog. But they will grow up and if you want them to be well behaved and obedient as an adult dog you need to start their training right away.

Of course, when we think about the basics of puppy training we all think about housetraining and that may be the most important training we have to do. But what about leash training and training to come, sit, lie down and stay? These are also very important tasks for your puppy to learn if he is going to become a well-mannered adult.

When you are training your dog there are some things that are consistent and work every time. All dogs and other animals, including people, respond better to love and positive reinforcement than to negative reinforcement. Dogs inherently want to please their masters but if you respond in a negative manner he may create a fear and he will be less likely to react to what you want.

When you train your dog be sure that you reinforce the desired behaviors with treats, affection, verbal praise and more. Most often you should use verbal praise. Praise your dog almost every time but only give him treats once every so often. If he gets a treat every time his behavior will diminish and too many treats can affect his health and your pocketbook.

Another thing is if you recall your high school science classes about classical conditioning and Pavlov's dogs, intermittent reinforcement is more effective at confirming the behavior than consistent reinforcement. When the dogs got the treats every time they were less likely to exhibit the desired behavior consistently, yet when they thought they might get a treat the behavior was more consistent and reinforced deeper.

Using hand signals in addition to voice commands is very useful when you are training your dog. As soon as he gets used to both, teach him to respond to each separately. This can come in veryuseful in some situations.

As a minimum, you will want to teach your dog to come, sit, lie down and stay, along with leash training. There may also be some behavior training that you may want to consider, especially if your dog is rather hyperactive and rambunctious. A well-trained dog is a well-behaved dog and everyone enjoys a well-behaved dog.

As you train your dog, the bond between the two of you will grow and it will be a pleasure to have him as part of your family for many years to come.

Puppyhood is the "formative" period for your dog. What you teach him during this time will most likely stick with him the rest of his life. One of the most important things you will be teaching him is where to potty.

We need to realize that puppies are like children in that they are needy for attention and require a routine. The best thing you can do to ease the potty-training process for your pup is to make sure that you establish the "sleep-eat-potty" routine.

A good way to save your sanity is to admit right off the bat that your puppy will have accidents. You can help ease these by keeping some newspaper in a dedicated spot so that your pup can at least familiarize himself with going in one area if he can't make it outside. This works particularly well if you don't have a doggy door and your puppy relies on you to let him out.

Understand that a puppy's system is like clockwork. When you feed or water him, he will be ready to potty about 15 - 20 minutes later. The key is to make sure your pup has access to the yard (or wherever you're teaching him to potty) when the time comes. Arranging your puppy's routine to match your own is the easiest way to expect when he's hungry or needs to potty.

Be sure that you separate "potty time" from "play time." Puppies love to explore. It's natural and should be encouraged, but only when it's the appropriate time. Nothing is more frustrating than to be up at 2 am with your little guy running around the yard for twenty minutes, only to potty as soon as you get back inside.

Now would be a great time to teach your puppy the praise and discipline phrases you intend to use throughout training. Many people use terms such as "good boy/girl" and "no." Just remember that while puppies require a firm hand and patience, this is also a time to enjoy your puppy while he's young and full of energy!

Although its April, the weather in Chicago has been cold! In fact, we had snow yesterday. Good thing that I have a dog who couldn't be bothered with the temperature. Snow, rain, winds, Janey loves to go out. Like a good owner, I bought a few extra-warm sweaters and a good fleece jacket and we're off! One thing I love to do with my dog is go on road trips. Here are a few things to be aware of when you're planning on traveling with your dog.

I decided to put together a list of what to do/how to prepare for the road trip with your dog. My normal plan is to wait until the night before and throw stuff in the car, hoping to not forget anything. I can buy whatever I need along the way, so whats the big deal? However, it is always good to have a plan, so thats my mission for my next few road trips.

Be sure to have an ID tag for your dog. Make sure it includes your dogs name, your name, and contact information. You may also want to put your vets number on the tag. I like having a secondary phone number just in case.

Get a doggie first aid kit. You never know what will happen, especially if youre traveling on the highway and have to let your dog out at various rest stops. They can pick up ticks, step on things that irritate paws or get scratched.

You may want to visit a vet prior to leaving. Ask about special vaccines. I focus on Lyme's disease vaccinations because we spend a lot of time outside in the wild. Heartworm prevention medication is a necessity too because where there is still water, there are mosqitos. If you're going to stay in a hotel, consider getting some flea protection also, as a courtesy to the establishment.

Pack dog food in an air-tight container. Pack dog bowls and a couple gallons of water for the trip. Youll most likely have access to water, but I like to be safe and bring a few gallons just in case. Get together your dogs collar, leash, snacks, toys, a brush, extra towels, clean-up bags and any medicines your dog needs. Also, figure out what your dog is going to sleep on. If we are going camping, I like to bring an old comforter for her to chill on during the day in a nice shady place. That way I can just throw it out when were done.

Know what you're going to do about meals while traveling. You could eat fast-food, or you could just bring a big cooler and plenty of ice. I like the later. That way I can find a picnic table and everyone can eat together outside, weather permitting. With a dog, depending on the age, plan on stopping every 4 hours to let the dog stretch, get some water, and relieve himself.

** Did you know its estimated that on hot summer days the inside of your car can heat up to 160 in minutes? NEVER leave a pet in a car, even with the windows open, in hot weather! **

There are great places in the US to explore during summer with your dog. State parks and camp grounds are a favorite of mine. With a little planning, you should be able to have a great vacation and bring your dog with!
