How Can I Handle My Baby And Puppy

When you bring a baby into a household in which a puppy has already been living in, there are some issues that can arise and therefore helping your puppy to adjust to the new arrival is a very important step that must never be overlooked. The puppy views the entire home as his territory and as such, when you bring home a new family member, the puppy can feel threatened by the intrusion into his territory. Furthermore, up until the point in which the new baby is brought home, the puppy is the center of all the attention in the home and when you take this away by bringing in a new baby, the puppy can become jealous.
There is no exact proven method for preparing for this type of scenario, but there are some great suggestions out there that can help- make the transition a smoother one.
1) For starters, it is important to remember that the puppy is used to being the sole center of attention but after you bring in the new arrival, there will be times that the puppy may even be completely ignored. Unfortunately, the puppy has to get used to this fact and you should not have to change anything for him. In order to prepare for this, you may want to try ignoring the puppy for one full hour each and every day at different time everyday for at least 2 weeks before you bring home the baby.
2) You will also have many of the baby’s items sprawled out across the home and this does include toys. These toys are the baby’s and not the puppies and you must teach the puppy this fact. He has to learn that he is only allowed o play with his toys, toys that were given to him and not items that he found and decided to play with.
Place a baby toy next to one of his toys, watch for him to try and grab for the baby toy and when he does, tell him NO. The draw the puppy’s attention to its own toys so that it can learn which toy is his and which is not. You may also choose to mark the baby’s toys with mouthwash and since the dog will hate the taste, he will associate the baby’s toys with the taste of the mouthwash and stay clear of them.
3) You will also need to get your puppy accustomed to other things that belong to the baby and not him. To do this you will need to allow the puppy to sniff the baby’s items. Furthermore, baby’s love tugging and pulling and to prevent the puppy from getting startled and excited the first time this happens, tug and pull at the puppy when you praise and pet him. You want to desensitize your puppy to the baby’s actions and sounds so that the puppy is not startled and excited by any action the baby could do.
