Some common dog health problems are preventable. Several health problems for dogs can have severe health consequences if not treated.

Fleas are perhaps the most common dog health problem. Dog owners may not think of fleas as a dog health problem, but fleas can carry parasitic disease and trigger skin allergies in dogs.

Fleas can be difficult to get rid of, especially if not treated promptly. Dog owners should carefully follow the directions when using flea products such as sprays and shampoo. Monthly applications of dog flea repellent may be beneficial.

Heartworms are another common dog health problems caused by parasites. Heartworm infestations can be fatal. Since heartworm disease and the treatment of heartworms can be fatal, the dog owner should consider using a medication that protects the dog from heartworms.

Pawing at the ears or shaking the head can be signs of an ear infection. Ear infections in dogs can be caused by ear mites or bacteria. Dogs with earflaps are most susceptible to ear infections.

Many common dog diseases are prevented by vaccines. A dog owner should discuss the recommended vaccination schedule for dogs with the veterinarian to make sure that the dog is protected from disease.

Distemper is one dog disease for which there is a vaccine. Rabies, Parvo, and kennel cough are other dog diseases that can be prevented with vaccinations.

One common dog health problem that is not prevented by vaccines is bloat. This potentially fatal condition is caused by the twisting of the stomach. Large dog breeds are prone to bloat. Dog owners should not let their dogs be active after eating.

Some common dog health problems are problems with the dogs skeletal structure. Large dog breeds are often susceptible to hip dysplasia. Dachshunds may develop spinal problems.

Dental problems are a type of common dog health problem. Many dog owners ignore their dogs dental health. Dog owners should remember that tartar and plaque naturally buildup on their dogs teeth. Regular brushing and veterinary dental visits can help prevent serious dental problems.
